BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Hitachi Group's environmental management aims to mitigate climate change, resource depletion, ecosystem destruction and other increasingly serious global-scale threats to the environment. Hitachi’s Environmental Vision is based on three pillars, prevention of global warming, conservation of resources, and preservation of ecosystems, so that it can provide the world with sustainable products and services and conduct business globally in ways that reduce its environmental footprint. In order to assure its stakeholders about the reliability of the environmental data disclosed in its environmental sustainability report, Hitachi chose to call upon Bureau Veritas to verify its methods.

SOLUTION

Hitachi engaged Bureau Veritas Japan Co., Ltd. to review the fiscal 2009 environmental performance data of the parent company and most of its group’s companies. The standards, guidelines and calculation methods used in collecting data appear on its web site. One of the highlights of this review is to focus on the contribution of Hitachi’s products and services to the reduction CO2 emissions. In this way Hitachi can differentiate itself from its competitors through its contribution to the prevention of global warming.

Due to Hitachi’s wide range of products and activities worldwide, Bureau Veritas proposed a phased approach to its review of Hitachi’s practices to verify Hitachi’s CO2 emission calculation procedures and methodology. This will be expanded to reach at target goal.

BENEFITS

With this review initiative Hitachi has enhanced the reliability of the data disclosed in its report, thereby ensuring the stakeholders’ positive perceptions of Hitachi’s global efforts to combat pollution and climate change. Reporting their responsible business practices has led to them to have an edge over their competitors.

This review has also enabled Hitachi to more clearly define its method for estimating amounts. Finally, the review represents the beginning of a long-term partnership between Hitachi and Bureau Veritas, which will enable the Company to better ensure consistent high quality and continuous improvement in its environmental sustainability management systems.
