BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Schindler technicians work in moving and unmonitored environments, facing a variety of risks and spending much time driving to job sites. The objective is to make all technicians more committed to their own safety. In such a case, solutions designed for manufacturing industries cannot apply. Schindler required support from an organization with a strong international presence, able to implement customized solutions based on safety behavior techniques and to cascade them everywhere in its global network, from managers to field technicians.
SOLUTION
Schindler chose Bureau Veritas because of its excellent reputation in the Safety & Health field and its ability to operate in all countries with a vast knowledge of local regulations. Bureau Veritas also offered a customized solution adapted to Schindler’s corporate goals. Schindler’s corporate Safety and Health Department and Bureau Veritas teams developed a global safety management system with training modules, including trainers’ training, the goal being to make safety a reflex.
Bureau Veritas delivered management training – from top managers to line managers – and Schindler local resources performed technician training. In order to be as effective as possible on a global scale, Schindler scrupulously followed Bureau Veritas’ advice in the production of training videos that would be pertinent to each country: the films show technicians in their local, daily working environments where they may face safety issues and make mistakes and then demonstrates how to reduce the risk of injury.
BENEFITS
Implementing a complete safety training solution throughout the organization ensures safety for all: each management layer is informed of safety issues and reminded of management’s liability in case of accidents, and knowing Safety best practices encourages employees to avoid risky behavior. The training program targets senior technicians as they are often the hardest to convince and should set an example in the field; unfortunately, they are also the ones who have developed risky behaviors over the years. Though they may be expert technicians, many times they perform their job in their own way resulting at times, sadly, in severe injuries. This safety program helps ensure that they do their utmost to prevent more accidents in the future.
